Protein

The question I get asked most frequently is "How do you get your protein if you don't eat meat or dairy?"  I eat a wide variety of non-animal proteins, and when combined together throughout the week, I have consumed plenty of complete proteins.  Here is a simple list:

Beans:  (legumes) all varieties, kidney, chickpeas, black, pinto, lima, black eyed peas, cannellini, peas, peanuts

Soy:  tofu, tempeh, edamame, miso, soy burgers, soy milk

Whole Grains:  brown rice, cracked wheat, *quinoa, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, barley, oats, rye, spelt, seitan, (100% whole wheat bread, tortillas, pasta and cous cous)

Nuts and Seeds:  nut butter, peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, chia seeds etc.

There are so many choices, more than meat!  In essence, all forms of vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds contain protein to a certain extent.

*Quinoa is a complete protein on its own
